The existing building was one of Melbourne’s largest public libraries, it had a distinct, modernist form – the internal space was cavernous, with the focus on the shelves of the lending library.
Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries (YPRL) asked Content Studio to redesign the internal spaces, so they could more effectively accommodate the diverse program of a contemporary library. In effect, to turn the building into a community living room.
We created a marketplace near the entry, reduced the size of the check-in counter, added a ‘not for profit’ café, created better connections to the outdoor terrace and children’s garden. We specified new furniture and joinery that could be easily moved for community events, created collaboration zones and areas for quiet study.
